Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course 6th Edition (2 days)

The Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course is a two-day course focusing on the application of essential fetal heart monitoring knowledge and skills used in intrapartum clinical practice.  The course consists of didactic and skill station content.

The lecture provides analysis of case scenarios requiring synthesis of key principles pertinent to the following:

  • The physiologic basis of fetal heart monitoring
  • Tracing interpretation
  • Clinical interventions
  • Verbal and written communication skills

The skill stations focus on demonstration, practice and testing of skills pertaining to the following:

  • Fetal heart rate auscultation
  • Performing Leopold's maneuvers
  • Placement of a fetal spiral electrode and intrauterine pressure catheter
  • Interpretations of tracings
  • Identification of indicated clinical interventions
  • Communication and documentation
  • Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Two-Day Course - $300.00

Upon successful completion of the course the participant will:

  • Assess EFM tracings utilizing NICHD terminology
  • Interpret EFM tracings, analyze uterine activity and discuss the implications of contractions on fetal well-being
  • Describe clinical interventions and the related maternal-fetal physiology
  • Effectively communicate patient data through verbal and documentation methods
  • Describe roles and responsibilities of health care providers when using FHM in intrapartum care
  • Demonstrate selected fetal monitoring skills
Expected Level of Learner: 

The Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course builds on the knowledge and skills of experienced nurses and physicians.  It is designed for clinicians who have previously completed a basic or foundations FHM course and who utilize FHM in the intrapartum setting.  It is not an introductory level fetal monitoring course.

8:15 - 9:00 a.m. Assessment
9:00 - 10:30 a.m. Interpretation (includes break)
10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Techniques of FHM
11:30 - 12:15 p.m. Lunch (on your own)
12:15 - 1:30 p.m. Interventions
1:30 - 2:40 p.m. Communication (includes break)
2:40 - 3:10 pm. Evaluation and Synthesis
3:10 - 3:30 p.m. Summary and Instruction for Skill Stations


DAY TWO (3rd Floor Conference Room)

8:00 - 8:15 a.m. Introduction
8:15 - 9:00 a.m. Integration Practice
9:00 - 9:10 a.m. Break
9:10 - 10:10 a.m. Integration Test
10:10 - 11:10 a.m. Communicaton Practice and Test
11:10 - 12:10 p.m. Auscultation Practice and Test
12:10 - 1:00 p.m. Lunch (on your own)
1:00 - 3:00 pm. Leopold's, FSE, IUPC Practice and Tests
3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Evaluation and Retesting (if necessary)


Continuing Education Credit: 

Participants who attend the full course and successfully pass the skills and written tests earn 18 contact hours of continuing nursing education credit or 15.25 continuing medical education credit.  No partial credit will be awarded.

Prior to the Course: 

Review the most recent Fetal Heart Monitoring Priciples and Practices textbook (Fifth Edition), concentrating on areas that are new or more difficult for you.  (The textbook will be sent to you after registration is received.)
