Today’s labor and delivery nurses need to keep their fetal heart monitoring skills up to date. The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) can train your staff in fetal heart rate monitoring.
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) requires that staff demonstrate knowledge and skills appropriate to their assigned responsibilities, which involves more than on-the-job training. JCAHO also requires documentation of those skills by a qualified professional. AWHONN’s Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles and Practices course provides information and hands-on experience. As part of AWHONN’s course, participants must pass skills and written tests to receive continuing education credit.
The Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course is a 2-day course focusing on the application of essential fetal heart monitoring knowledge and skills used in intrapartum clinical practice. The course consists of didactic and skill station content.
The lecture provides analysis of case scenarios requiring synthesis of key principles pertinent to the following:
- The physiologic basis of fetal heart monitoring
- Tracing interpretation
- Clinical interventions
- Verbal and written communication skills
The skill stations focus on demonstration, practice and testing of skills pertaining to the following:
- Fetal heart rate auscultation
- Performing Leopold's maneuvers
- Placement of a fetal spiral electrode and intrauterine pressure catheter
- Interpretations of tracings
- Identification of indicated clinical interventions
- Communication and documentation
To promote integration of knowledge and skills essential to nursing assessment, promotion, and evaluation of fetal well-being during labor.
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will:
- Assess EFM tracings utilizing NICHD terminology
- Interpret EFM tracings, analyze uterine activity and discuss the implications of contractions on fetal well-being
- Describe clinical interventions and the related maternal-fetal physiology
- Effectively communicate patient data through verbal and documentation methods
- Describe roles and responsibilities of health care providers when using FHM in intrapartum care
- Demonstrate selected fetal monitoring skills
Expected Level of Learner:
The course builds on the knowledge and skills of experienced nurses and physicians. It is designed for clinicians who have previously completed a basic or foundations FHM course and who utilize FHM in the intrapartum setting. It is not an introductory level fetal monitoring course.

Continuing Education Credit:
- Participants who attend the full course and successfully pass the skills and written tests earn 18 contact hours of continuing nursing education credit or 15.25 continuing medical education credit.
- No partial credit will be awarded.

Review the most recent Fetal Heart Monitoring Priciples and Practices textbook (Fifth Edition), concentrating on areas that are new or more difficult for you. (The textbook will be sent to you after registration is received.)
