CHI St. Alexius Health Receives Region's First and ONLY Primary Plus Stroke Center Certification

CHI St. Alexius Health announces that it has received certification from DNV GL Healthcare as a Primary Plus Stroke Center, affirming the hospital’s readiness to handle a full range of stroke-related medical problems. CHI St. Alexius Health is the first and only hospital in the region to achieve this certification.

“This certification let’s our community know we have the most current resources and commitment to provide the best possible stroke care,” says Raumi Kudrna, Stroke Program Director. “It’s a combination of the right equipment, personnel and training to quickly assess and treat strokes. Our team’s expertise directly impacts patient outcomes. Achieving certification validates all the effort we have put into this program and to ensuring the health and safety of our patients and community.”

CHI St. Alexius Health was the first Primary Stroke Center in ND. As the tertiary stroke center, CHI St. Alexius has the resources and processes to care for acute stroke patients. Now, as a Primary Plus Stroke Center, CHI St. Alexius has expanded the stroke treatment window of time from four hours to 24 hours following stroke symptoms. The stroke team is the only certified program in the region capable of providing clot removal procedures.

The DNV GL Healthcare Primary Plus Stroke Center Certification is based on standards set forth by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association, and affirms that the medical center addresses the full spectrum of stroke care - diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education - and establishes clear metrics to evaluate outcomes.

“Achieving certification shows commitment to excellence,” says Patrick Horine, CEO of DNV GL Healthcare. “And it helps demonstrate to your community that you are performing at the highest level.”

According to the National Stroke Association, stroke is a leading cause of death, killing nearly 130,000 people each year, and is a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability. Because stroke or “brain attack” effects blood flow to the brain, rapid and effective treatment can save lives and provide the best chance of limiting the extent of long-term damage.
