It's National Stroke Awareness Month, and CHI St. Alexius Health makes history after receiving the regions first and only Primary Plus Stroke Center Certification. The health center received a certification from DNV GL Healthcare, an organization that helps hospitals, nationwide, advance their practices. The certificate says CHI St. Alexius Health addresses the full spectrum of stroke care and is performing at the highest level.
Now with this certification and collaboration with DNV GL Healthcare, they are able to advance practices, by expanding the stroke treatment window from four hours to 24 hours following stroke symptoms. The stroke team is the only certified program in the region capable of providing clot removal procedures.
"Our team is amazing and they did an amazing job pulling together and meeting the best practice standards, and this certification allows us to capitalize on that and highlight that work that has been done. Most importantly it's our community and the community should be proud. We are the first facility in the region that is certified," said Raumi Kudrna, CHI Stroke Program Director.
According to the National Stroke Association, strokes are a leading cause of death, killing nearly 130,000 people each year. It's a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability.
