CHI St. Alexius Health purchases robot to assist in Total Knee Replacements

CHI St. Alexius Health and The Bone & Joint Center are excited to offer Zimmer Biomet’s ROSA® Knee System, a robotically-assisted surgical system designed to help perform total knee replacement surgery. Close to 800,000 knee replacement surgeries are done every year in the United States. The ROSA robot builds a virtual model of the patient’s knee allowing the surgeon to operate with even more precision. For the patient that means faster recovery, less pain and improved mobility.

“Our physicians have the experience to utilize the extra data produced by the robot to develop a customized surgical plan for that patient, taking into consideration anatomical issues and differences that would otherwise might not be known,” said Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Brian Dahl. The data provided assists with complex decision-making and enables surgeons to use this new technology to control and move surgical instruments, allowing for greater precision and flexibility during procedures.

Bringing this cutting-edge technology to the region was made possible by contributions from local businesses, organizations and individual donors through a fundraising campaign conducted by CHI St. Alexius Health Foundation. “Everyone will need health care at some point in their lives. When a surgery is needed, it is so much better for the person if he or she can have it close to home, close to his or her support network and healing team,” said Kathy Miller, CHI St. Alexius Health Foundation Resource Cabinet member. “That’s why Brad (Kathy’s husband) and I believe in supporting local health care and its progress.”

“Strong health care is a pillar to a thriving community,” said Dean Anagnost, CEO of KLJ and cabinet member. “At KLJ we believe being a good community member means supporting causes which positively impact the community. Our mission to improve the lives of people and communities by engineering progressive infrastructure aligns well with bringing the new robotic technologies for surgical procedures to the region, and that’s why we’re proud to support the campaign and be part of advancing the region’s health care services.”

CHI St. Alexius Health is the first and only hospital in ND to receive The Joint Commission’s Advanced Certification for Total Knee and Total Hip Replacements. CHI St. Alexius Health is grateful to offer ROSA Knee as one more tool to help surgeons advance and lead care in the region. “We thank all of the donors who gave to this project,” said Kurt Schley, CHI St. Alexius Health President. “With the community’s continued partnership we continue to serve the region’s patients in exceptional ways, honoring our legacy to ‘Receive all as Christ.”
