Varicose veins occur when the valves in leg veins no longer function, resulting in pooling blood in the legs. People often assume these blue, red or flesh-colored veins are just a cosmetic nuisance, confuse them with spider veins or write them off as simply a sign of getting older.
Varicose veins may be related to a more serious medical condition called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). In addition to causing leg pain and swelling, CVI can result in leg restlessness, skin damage and even ulcers. Today less than 10 percent of people seek treatment.
