Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a test to examine the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine. An EGD is performed to look for abnormal growths, inflammation, bleeding, and for any narrowing or blockages.

A colonoscopy, the gold standard of colon cancer screening, helps prevent cancer by removing polyps (abnormal growths in the colon) before they turn into cancer. It is recommended that screenings begin at age 45.

When colorectal cancer is found early, the five-year survival rate is 90 percent. Most people who get colon cancer have no family history and often you don’t have symptoms in early stages of the disease. That is why screenings are so important.
