PGY1 Inpatient Residency Program 

ASHP PGY1 Program Purpose

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies. 

CHI St. Alexius Health’s inpatient residency program is a minimum of twelve months and a full-time practice commitment. It has been accredited by ASHP since 1995. This program provides the residents with a supportive and instructional environment in which to develop the necessary problem-solving skills to become confident, competent and independent in providing pharmaceutical care to patients in multiple settings. Teaching opportunities, research coordination and serving as a preceptor and role model for students to enhance the learning environment and development of leadership skills. Professional commitment is strengthened through the development of self-evaluation skills and involvement in professional societies and community health activities. 

During the year, residents will gain experience in teaching and will actively lead and facilitate learning opportunities for other health care providers in pharmacology and therapeutics. Additionally, CHI St. Alexius Health residents serve as preceptors for Pharm.D. students on clinical rotations. 

Residents will initiate a project in clinical research. Residents may initiate projects or work with clinical investigators on ongoing research projects. In addition, participation in drug use evaluations are expected. 

Each resident is required to present a poster at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and presentation at the Pharmacy Residents Conference based on the resident’s independent research or involvement.

Adult Medicine 

  • Experience in pharmaceutical care in a general medicine setting

  • Develop the basic knowledge and skills to make appropriate pharmacotherapeutic interventions in the adult patient

  • Expand and apply pharmaceutical knowledge in the adult medicine setting

  • Participation in daily rounds with physicians, medical residents, and medical students

Critical Care 

  • Participate in daily rounds with the intensivists and multi-disciplinary team

  • Dosing of critical care medications

  • Physician and patient education

  • Emphasis on adult critical care

Infectious Disease 

  • Antimicrobial Stewardship program

  • Dosing of antibiotics

  • Review of patients with positive cultures

  • Participate in daily ASP team rounds

  • Perform pharmacokinetics monitoring

Pediatrics/Neonatology

  • Emphasis on pharmacotherapy related to common pediatric diseases and specific neonatal conditions

  • Age and weight specific dosing

  • Parenteral and enteral nutrition consults

  • Involvement with the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic

Practice Management 

  • Become familiar with the skills and knowledge necessary for hospital pharmacy managers

  • Develop problem-solving management skills

  • Participate in development of drug use policy

  • Participate in drug distribution process improvement activities

  • Learn techniques for resolving conflict

  • Learn different budgeting strategies and how they are utilized

Staffing  

  • Staffing in the inpatient pharmacy and IV room 

  • Responsibilities include order verification, checking and dispensing medications 

Longitudinal Rotations

  • Longitudinal rotations that follow orientation and span over the year of the residency include: Clinical Weekends, Longitudinal Project, Longitudinal Management, Longitudinal Psychiatry, Longitudinal Staffing 

  • Additional experience with pharmaceutical care in a chronic population with involvement over the year of the residency include: Cystic Fibrosis Clinic and Cardiac Rehab

  • Cardiology

  • Emergency and Trauma 

  • Home Infusion

  • Psychiatry 

  • Hospitalists 

  • Nephrology  

  • Operating Room 

  • Repeat Required Rotation 

PGY1 Community Based Residency Program 

ASHP PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Purpose

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies. 

CHI St. Alexius Health’s community-based residency program was established in 2019. The program utilizes collaborative resources from both CHI St. Alexius and North Dakota State University School of Pharmacy to support the resident through the twelve-month full-time practice commitment. The resident will build on their skills as a clinical pharmacist by splitting their time between our outpatient and clinic pharmacy settings. Research, teaching and precepting are opportunities provided to further develop and enhance the skillset of any modern pharmacist. 

Throughout the year, the resident will progressively build on their skills and knowledge by collaborating with physicians and other health care providers. This collaboration allows for the continual growth and improvement of patient care. Maintaining the highest level of patient care is a major objective of this program. 

The resident will spend the year working on several projects designed to create a forward-thinking, problem solving and experienced pharmacist that can take on any challenge throughout their career. Additionally,the resident will be required to present a poster at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting as well as present at the Pharmacy Residents Conference based on one of the resident’s projects. 

Mandan Pharmacy

  • Develop individualized care plans for anticoagulation patients to share with provider

  • Work with providers to modify plans for surgical procedures

  • Provide education and training on various continuous glucose monitors and specialty medications

Home Infusion

  • Select appropriate method of home infusion medication administration (ie: IV push, Elastomeric Pump, Gravity Pump, IV Pump)

  • Conduct patient training, follow-up, and lab review

  • Provide on-call services to home infusion patients

Practice Management

  • Attend weekly meeting with hospital management team

  • Develop problem-solving management strategies

  • Evaluate different budget strategies and how they are used

Community Pharmacy Staffing 

  • Perform daily responsibilities of a staff pharmacist

  • Identify patients that would benefit from programs such as medication packaging or Med-Sync

  • Supervise technician staff to ensure accurate dispensing of medications

Mandan Clinic

  • Provide MTM services to pharmacy and clinic patients using the Outcomes platform

  • Follow patients receiving opioid medications with Starfield platform

  • Review clinic patients medication lists before appointments with provider to ensure accuracy

Longitudinal Projects

  • Create a business plan to increase pharmacy services or revenue

  • Complete a research project relating to community pharmacy

  • Tobacco Cessation

  • Cardiac Rehab 

  • Vaccination Clinic

Application Requirements 

Applicants must possess a Pharm.D. degree and be eligible for licensure by the North Dakota State Board of Pharmacy. Previous experience in hospital pharmacy practice and a sound academic record are also important considerations. 

Applications will be accepted beginning November 15 via PHORCAS. The deadline for receipt of the application, college transcript, and three letters of reference is January 15. After applications are reviewed, qualified candidates will be contacted to schedule an interview.
